What you're finding with the new stall converter is that now when you step on it, your rpms flash to a point where your engine is producing greater torque. Before the stall upgrade you would have to accelerate through the lower rev range (and slowly).
Upgraded cylinder heads are certainly a route to more power. Combine that with a matching camshaft and you're well on your way.
It's important to consider other aspects of the build when moving up to heads and cam. Compression ratio and how it relates to the cam is very important. You will also have to consider how the computer will react to the new combination.

Re: amazed new converter... now are my heads holding me back

i have a gm hotcam with a ported edelbrock/slp tpi.. right now i have 9:7 to 1 compression... i think they go together but my heads are a restriction because both my cam and intake can outflow the heads which is why i still have a bottle neck at 4500-5000 rpms....... i have plenty of low end now but with the lack of better heads my top end... i dont know how much power they can support unported... but they are definitely not helping things i know that... with heads like afr i want around 10:1 or 10:3 to 1 compression and want to add 1.6 rockers to my cam.....

I've read about successful combos with the Hot cam mostly with regards to Vortec cylinder heads. I would think that Vortecs aren't for you considering you've invested in an intake already. It's probably a safe bet that any relatively small runner (180cc) with a combustion chamber that keeps your SCR where you need it would be suitable.
Do a few calcualtions with compression ratio and the cam you have to see what your target is. When checking out cylinder head specs examine the flow numbers at and below your potential maximum lift. You'll like what you get if you can use a cylinder that gives good flow in the mid lift range.
