my buddys 1997 lt1 has a knock we are not sure what its is. its coming from the pass side of the motor, it does not seem to be loud enough to be a rod. i drove the car yesturday and raged on it he said he did not care, had it bouncing off rev limiter at 6000 rpms the knock did not get worst.

my question is are there any tricks to pin point the location and how to fix it i think rod knock, wrist pin, or lifter.

i was told to unhook the spark plug wires and when you hit the messed up cylinder and unhook the spark plug wire the knock will stop or get really quiet. well he didnt want to pull wires thier a pain to get to so i pulled fuel injectors dont know if that would do the same thing and pulling plug wires or not i guess no fuel no fire?

well when i did that the knock did not go away, then i was told for lifters to put gas or desiel in your oil to help clean the lifters oil passages, he has not done that yet.

my question is what to do and what to look for to pin point the location better, niether of use are mechanics and hes broke so wont be taking it to a mechanic. thanks alot for any information.



also motor is plenty fast and does not miss a beat, no smoke no nothing that i could see just a knock or tap not sure

take a piece of tubing and put on end to your ear and the other to different locations of where you think the knock is coming from and that will give you a good idea of where it's coming from. it's basicly a stethoscope. I actually had a bad knock yesterday on my car. I removed the valve cover and found that my #5 exhaust rocker somehow backed-off the lock nut. Retighted it and all was well.

 

If it dosn't get louder with RPM or goes away with RPM or heat its usually nothing mission critical yet. But what, ya never know.
