looks to be a coolant temperature switch that operates the cooling fan.

That style connector, which takes a female blade connector attached at 90* to the termina (as opposed to a straight-on blade connector) is telling me it's most likely the temp gague sender that would go in the driver's side cylinder head.
The pass. side head would be the aux. fan switch which should be either a straight-blade connector (older cars) or a single wire Weatherpack-style connector (newer cars).
In short, I don't think the connector type is the same on both sides and you should be able to logic this out if you look at the connectors sticking out of the wiring harness for each location.
