tpi questions

sorry its not going into a third gen. im attempting to put a tpi into my 87 toyota pickup (the way it should be, 22r 4 bangers just dont cut it, and ive dumped 2500 into this one!) from an 87 iroc-z. im mostly wondering what stuff i can eliminate from the wiring harness. minimum connections to run the engine, no need for tcc, vats, vss, etc etc. idk what all it has i have to check yet.

its going into a reg cab truck, keeping the 5 speed manual and 4x4, ill be running my 32x11.50x15 kuhmos with stock running gear.

just keeping it stock for the swap (maybe a small cam and roller rockers) and i dont wanna go carb to help with mileage and the smooth running of efi, and the tq from efi is perfect for hauling in my lil truck.

so what stuff can i eliminate. did searches and reading but didnt come up with much, any help would be appreciated

Re: tpi questions

First of all you need to aquire a good manual with diagrams before you think about installing this motor. Then you need to familiarize yourself with EFI. The things you can eliminate from the EFI system are limited to the ECM's programming. Any missing link may prevent the system from running in closed loop and may even cause it to go into fault mode. Thus negating the fuel efficiency youre hoping for. EFI is an excellent way to go, but you need to understand how it works, what each part does, and how each part affects the rest of the system before you dive into an installation.

You should cross wires to put the park neutral switch permanently in park. That way you can run a MAF ECM without using the MAF signal, the VSS is not used (or needed) and the engine will run in "default" (i.e. ****-poor mode.)

There's no reason for the combustion chamberts to run cool. Let 'em heat right up by deleting EGR too. You don't want to get mid 20's mpg. You want to get no better than 19.

Delete it all. Prove how simple the engine can be!

Yes this is a flame and yes you're going about the swap the wrong way.

(really though, I'd delete the AIR system and that's it.)

Re: tpi questions

I never had my speedometer cable hooked up to my tranny for a while. After months of stalling and having issues of trying to get the stalling to cease, I ran the codes and I found out that my VSS was bad. So I had no idea what to do. Well I finally had boughtin the Speedo cable and hooked here up. Then I realized that the SES light turned off. Come to find out, VSS finally worked because of the cable that I had installed. My point is you may very well need the the VSS. But i got a 86 and there is so much in common with the 87. As for as I know, 86 and 87 IROCs need the speedo cable to have the VSS working correctly.

Re: tpi questions

Connections a typical 1985-88 TPI Standalone Wiring Harness has

● Connector for Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
● Connector for Knock Sensor also the (ESC) spark control module
● Connector for Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
● Connector for Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) Sensor
● Connector for Oxygen (O2) Sensor
● Connector for Throttle Position (TP) Sensor
● Connector for Fuel Injectors
● Connector for Idle Air Control Motor (IAC) Valve
● Connector for Electronic Spark Timing (EST) Jumper
● Connector for Distributor / Ignition Module
● Connector for Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Switch
● Connector for Fuel Pump, MAF ON and MAF Burn Off Relays
● Connector for Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL)
● Connector for VSS
● Ring Terminals for 2 Ground Lugs
● Lead for Power Battery positive
● Lead for 12-Volt Switched Ignition Power
● Lead for Fuel Pump Positive Output
● Leads for Extras:
* Check Engine Light (Trigger)
* Electronic Speedometer
* Fan relay Trigger
* Park Neutral wire

You can run the fuel pump direct off the key but need the oil pressure switch as well so ECM knows the pump is running

There any several calibrations in the ECM that rely on a road speed reference so you need the VSS signal to ECM otherwise you have the sort of problems you did

This adapter gives you the VSS signal for retro ft apps
