L98/LB9 blowing headgaskets and intake leaks

I know the L98 on the Corvettes are known for blowing headgaskets after they switched to aluminum heads. I believe they redesigned something in 91 to try and fix the problem.

I was wondering if the L98/LB9 on the 3rd gens also have this problem?

And the L98 is known real bad for intake leaks on the Corvettes. Does the L98/LB9 on the 3rd gen's also have problems with intake leaks?

I've got a 3rd gen with a TBI on it that has alot of miles. So, I was thinking instead of getting something newer. To just get another low mileage 3rd gen since I already know how to work on them and mine has been realiable and cheap to maintain.

Never had either problem on mine with iron or aluminum heads.

Did the L98's and/or LB9's on the 3rd gen get aluminum heads? I read somewhere they kept iron heads. But that could have just been for year 86.

On the different Corvette forums, it is commonly reported having the head gaskets blow from around 7 and 8 on the L98's. Alot find their headgasket was bad there when they pulled the heads for another reason. So, the gasket was bad, but didn't show symptoms.

I know alot get leaking intake manifold gaskets. Though, most of it leaks out the rear or front past the RTV bead. My 89 Vette leaks out the rear manifold.

They all had iron heads, never had a headgasket problem. I had a manifold leak at the back passenger side where it's rtv'd. But it's got a vortex intake and heads on it.

That's good. The problem with the headgasket failure on the Vettes was because of the switch to aluminum heads. GM issued a bulletin on it. They changed something for 91 to try and fix the problem, but they went to LT1 the next year.

I am thinking of running a set of these 113's on a 1972' 400 block with soup dish pistions and TPI system, comp should be around 10.1:1, would this make a componded issue for the head gaskets.

Re: L98/LB9 blowing headgaskets and intake leaks

Little late on this: but all 1982-1992 3rg gen's has the iron heads, now rumors has it that the Firehawk was aluminum? But pleas correct me fells if I am mistaken about it... 91-92 models all l98 known even the special performance package B4C and the 1LE vehicle also was the Iron heads to, head gaskets no but every car differs from car to car. As far as common blown gaskets never we just use them hard and hope for the best, intake gaskets yes they sure do.... I also have 1 myself that I have to do to, so no camaro carried the aluminum until the 93 years to 02 models on all 4th gens models your 202 heads are prone to gaskets blown, but that's a Tpi that I would say that is still worth the fix for me,
Good luck and hope is all good
