1986 convertible tpi wont start and run right help?

ive got a 86 camaro convertible that had a tpi engine put into it,

sometimes it will start but run like total crap and wont idle, for ex.. mix up some plug wires, it runs like SH*^ i dont know if any plug wires are mixed up or if the distributor is 180 off or what, but i can tell alot of work has been done to this car, new dist, wires, plugs, fuel lines, fuel pump, top.

now the engine doesnt tick knock or leak,

but after it starts the motor wont smooth out unless its at about 3500 rpm and then it still runs rough,

after its shut off it wont start again,

sometimes itll fart like it wants to start but just wont,

other times itll just spin and wont fart to turn over....

anyone know what could be wrong?

i was told it could be a stretched timing chain, or the rotor button came loose in the dist, or its 180 deg out of time, or a vacume leak...

i hope its not the ecm

could it also be clogged injectors?

i dont know give me a hand anyone.... i need some help here lol

without actually hearing it in person it is hard telling but my guess is timing is off. It doesn't have to be 180 off to not run. check it with a timing light may take a while since it will only start sometimes but I think that is your problem

Check for a vac leak. Also check for wet plugs to rule out leaking injectors and see if the rail pressure holds. Go over the timing again to make sure. O2 & temp sensors also. Start with the basics before you start tossing money at it. Good luck. Maybe someone will chime in.

Re: 1986 convertible tpi wont start and run right help?

well i changed the plugs and it fired right up, the plugs were soaked with gas and starting fluid plus they were fouled out to boot, heres a video of it running,

and as you all know our thirdgens are a PITA to change the plugs, i had to get under it with a 5/8 open end wrench and get em out, plus its a realy tight space, man talk about fun, plus it was pouring rain? i had a tarp over the hood of the car so i wouldnt get wet but it didnt help much, but heres a video let me know what you think! thanks!

If the plugs are wet from gas it might indecate leaking injectors. How does it start hot. Check to see if the fp holds and look at your plugs again after it sits for a little, otherwise it sounds pretty good

when its hot it starts right up now, it used to drag but i got it to where it wont now, i think the starter might be getting heat soaked, so time for a heat sheild
