Various Questions on minor mods.

Hey guys. Im the proud new owner of an 87 iroc-z with the L98 motor. Im a relative noob with this stuff (my automotive knowledge is limited to 3 months worth of apprenticing in a Ford shop), and looking to do some basic upgrades. Money isnt really a concern, but let me be clear on this, Im NOT looking to be the best on the track. I just want a car thats a little more fun to drive. That being said, here is what I intend to do.

Full tune
TPIS big mouth intake, runners and 52mm throttle body.
Exhaust, headers back (need input on this. Ive heard Hooker is the best for the money, but dont know why)
Performance chip (also need input, I know nothing about these)
New gears in rear end (will it matter, and if so, what ratio should I go with)
Also curious if this part is even worthwhile http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...lowsensor.aspx

What do you think of these mods? Any info on them would be appreciated. Also slightly curious on options to improve economy.

Thanks guys

Re: Various Questions on minor mods.

If with a performance chip you are talking about preprogrammed off-the-shelf chips - don't waste your money.

What other options would I have that would be worth the money? Specifically, I heard someone mention that a certain chip and or programming thing would fix the governor that kicks in at 125mph...

Why? Your car will never see 125 on the 1/4 mile track without an engine swap, and if caught doing that on the highway you'll never drive it again (instant license yank).

Re: Various Questions on minor mods.

Engines make power from the inside out. All the bolt ons in the world will net only marginal gains without an engine that can make use of the external mods. Ive built 300+ HP L98s using all stock intake parts and exhaust. In the right combination, the stock TPI can support 350HP. The key is in the heads and cam. However, if you want a motor that you can have fun with and not worry about breaking it, you need to build a complete engine with a machine prepped block, balanced and clearanced rotating assembly. As far as rear end gears are concerned, your IROC likely has 3.23s which are plenty low with the 3.06 low gear of the 700R4. As long as your engine has the grunt to make the car perform.

Re: Various Questions on minor mods.

The best first mod is a set of Dyno Dons Headers and a dual cat-back Magnaflow system. Cut out the bottom of the air filter box. From here your track times will be in the high to mid 13's @ 98-102mph.
