What makes up the fuel pump module?

I have a 1988 Iroc Convertible that won't start. My mechanic says it needs a fuel pump module. I understand the fuel pump module to be the entire assembly in the tank, but I can't find an entire assembly anywhere. What parts would I need to buy to comprise the fuel pump module? Thanks in advance!!

Re: What makes up the fuel pump module?

Never heard of a "fuel pump module" either.

In the tank, you have the sender for the gauge (which is a float that rides up/down on a rod), and the fuel pump.

Before you go replacing the fuel pump, let's see if it works.

Get an extra body, male female neuter doesn't matter - sit them in the car, and have them turn on the key while YOU are under with your ear pressed to the gas tank - can you hear it whine for a second or 2? If so, then channces are you don't need a pump. Try replacing the fuel filter located in front of driver side tire first.

If pump doesn't run, then check the fuel pump relay and connector to make sure it's working. You should be able to hold the relay in your hand and feel it "click" when the key is turned on. If it doesn't click, try replacing it.

Lastly, before you think about replacing fuel pump, under the rear seat back, under the carpet, there will be a connector with 3 wires, purple, black, grey. Purple is sender to gauge, black is ground, grey is fuel pump 12v+. Put 12v+ to the grey and see if the pump runs.

If under any of these instances, the pump runs, but you are getting low pressure, I'd do fuel filter and retest pressure.

If under any of these instances, the pump runs, but you are getting NO pressure, then I'd guess that you will need to replace the pump. Although the pump runs, there is a little rubber hose attaching it to the hard metal line coming out of the gas tank - this rubber hose deteriorates over time spent in the gasoline - pump may run fine, but not sending any fuel into the fuel line since the rubber connector is shot.

Make sense? Hope so - I just had ALOT of oral surgery, and although I'm not needing or using any pain meds, I still may not bee 100% coherant

check the fuse under the hood by the battery if that fuse is blown the fuel pump will not get any power.
