Chip burning hardware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,I have been reading for two days on this subject. It seems as most the posts of where to get the hardware are really old.I have an 87 gta transam 5.7 with the 7165 ecm.I am looking to dive on into the chip burning relm and I need to be able to do this as cheap as possible.I was wanting to read/write/edit values like what temp the fan comes on, egr delete, smog delete,Change what temp the ecm goes into closed loop, cold start delete, and modify the maf table a little.More in the future. Can i get a complete package that would allow me to do this for $250 and under? Its all i have for this.I would like a complete package of hardware if possible.Yes i have read the articles under DIY prom but its mostly old info.Hopeing to get a little recent info on this matter.

Lets you do real time tuning changes ( even as you drive ) without having to open ECM up and replace chip.
can make changes sitting at your kitchen table then just connect the unit to ECM
Still need the bare adapter to connect to the ECM $30

Re: Chip burning hardware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Craig Moates makes great stuff....if you're only planning on tuning your car, the Ostrich is a great little unit. It's basically a memory module that replaces the chip in your ECM, and lets you make and save changes (via USB cable,) even while driving the car. The only catch is that you need a separate datalogger.
If you want to be able to datalog/tune in realtime/burn chips for multiple OBD1 GM cars, you can spend a little more on the AutoProm and have all those capabilities in one unit. The AutoProm is also capable of working like the Ostrich does (bypass the factory chip and run the car off the AutoProm's memory,) and do it WHILE datalogging, but also gives you the added ability to burn the final product onto a chip, and use the Autoprom on a different vehicle.
I've been using the AutoProm for quite a few years now, on my IROC as well as a couple of friends' cars. It's a great piece.
Also, fwiw, even the OLD info in the DIY-PROM forum is excellent info. These cars haven't exactly changed much since they were built 20 years ago. ;-)

Yep,I think ima save a little longer and grab a autoprom.I really like the all in one feature. From what i understand its been around for awhile,Whens the last time the price came down any?Anyhow it seems to be a good value. Thanks for the informative posts.Agreed the stickys have been more than just informative and are down right educational.I was kinda just makeing sure nothing newer came along.Nothing beats the info on this site,I love it.Not to mention the buying, selling, trading sections.I was thinking does thridgen sell bumper stickers? Would be a good advertisement for the site here and i would be more than willing to put one on my back glass.

Re: Chip burning hardware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't watch Craig's site enough to know about price changes, but the AutoProm has been around long enough that the pricing is stable. I wouldn't expect it to go down anytime in the near future, although it COULD go up if the components get more expensive. Inflation sucks.
Also, it's a GREAT value, in my humble opinion. And the one time I did have a problem with it, Craig had it fixed and back to me in no time flat.
