Fuel pressure with new EP381 fuel pump gone wild?
I have a 1986 camaro. It's a slow project, I'm in no rush.
I removed the original 305, installed a newly rebuilt 350 with Pro Topline heads, swapped in a 730 ECU, new harness, new injectors, etc. Drove the car for about 50 miles then took it to have it painted. They took over two years during the paint process. Build a new 1992 4L60 tranny in the meantime. When I tried to start it, it wouldn't. Long story short, fuel pump went bad. (Can't describe the odor of that fuel).
So I bought a new AC Delco EP381 fuel pump from Ebay, which is supposed to be more efficient. So I started it and voila it worked! But then the exhaust smelled way to rich. With previous pump I had fuel pressure set at 45psi via a BBK fuel pressure regulator. Installed a fuel pressure gauge and was pegged all the way to over 60psi!!! Maybe even more. I removed it now the poor gauge is no longer at zero, but at 10 psi
I tried loosening the fuel pressure regulator screw all the way and tried again but it still goes all the way beyond 60psi.
Did I choose the wrong pump? I did research in this forum and have read that there are more than a few people running it on their TPI setups. Is the BBK regulator not up to the task? Any ideas?
