383 TPI build
I don't have cam and head specs at my disposal right now, but I had a 383 build for my '91 Z28. The project has been going on for a LONG time (since 2003, but not just engine). The general items on the engine:
58mm TB, ported upper plenum, SLP runners, TPiS Big Mouth intake manifold, Canfield heads, custom ground Engle cam, 1.5/1.6 roller rockers, Dyno Don 1.75" primary -> 3" shorty headers, 3" magnaflow cat, Borla 3" cat-back, electric exhaust cut-out, TPiS adjustable FP Regulator, Racetronix fuel pump kit, Ford Racing 30 lb. injectors, custom computer tuning, MSD ignition box and distributor.
I had the engine build at Proformance here in Rochester.
I just got the engine started about a month ago, and I just ordered a EBL P4 computer that should be in tomorrow. the tun that is in the car now is a custom burned chip per the specs of the motor done by Kennedy Dyno tune in Buffalo. I was originally going to bring the car back out to Buffalo to have kennedy dyno tune it, but have recently decided to go with the EBL and try it instead.
My question is in regards to ignition timing. When we assembled the motor, we set the distributor to 0 (or as close to as possible). When we first started it, it ran very nice. We let it warm up, unplugged the timing harness, and checked the timing, it was around 20 BTC something (which is a guess because it was off the scale). We tried to bring it a little lower, but it is running rougher now.
Any idea what a good number is to start at for timing?
Obviuosly, I still need to tune it with the EBL, but I know one of the parameters is to set the base timing. I was reading another thread that was talking about overall timing, what is the difference?
Thanks

I think you'll get better information in the TPI forum than in the Engine Swap forum.
