Alternator/Battery Issue...HELP!!

I have an 86 Iroc. I was driving to work and smelled something funny in the car. My windows were down and I just thought that the weird smell was from all the road construction outside. The smell lasted all the way to work. After that it stopped. The next day the car completely died in the middle of the road. I took out the battery and it was dead. I had it charged and tested and it is still good. So I took out the alternator and had it tested and was told it was bad. So I got a new alternator and installed it and had the system tested and the battery is still not getting a charge. I removed the new alternator and had it tested and it passed so it is good. Not sure what the problem can be. Faulty wiring somewhere? If so how can I fix that? So to sum up, battery and alternator are good but alternator is not charging the battery. HELP!

I would check the wiring from the ALT. Might have fried the wiring some where. The smell was electrical im assuming? Just trace it out and see if anything fried/melted and if so replace whatever is bad.

Re: Alternator/Battery Issue...HELP!!

i had that happen on a school bus. the charge wire had burned inside the casing and we just couldnt figure it out for hours. trace where your charge wire goes and the make sure you have continuity end to end. also now would be a good time to take a look at the connections on your junction block. if there cruddy clean'em then reseal them with so good electrical sealant. one last thing to check isto make sure that your alternator on wire has voltage. i myself had that happen yesterday on an 8 month old alternator and made an *** of myself for demanding a new one..... oh well.
