Car only starts sometimes!!

hey guys i gotta 89 iroc it runs good but the only thing is, is that when it sits for a long time it takes a while to start and after its been driven for a while and is hot it wont start until cooled. my neighbor checked the fuel valve and said it was bubbling and said thats bad and that there is moisture in there and its heating up the gas making it hard to start. has anyone had this problem??? how do i fix this if this is the problem? advice please and thanks

Re: Car only starts sometimes!!

When you say after its been driven and its hot it wont start until its cooled, do you mean it wont crank or it just turns over? I know with my car it used to overheat some because my fans burnt up, but thats besides the point, it wouldnt start until it cooled off. From my understanding it was the battery getting overheated but once it cooled down some it started right up. Same thing happens on my motorcyle.

As for the fuel bubbling, I'm not sure. If you have any question as to water being in it, try running some water remover additive through your system. Can find it at any auto parts store.

Might look into a new ignition control module as well.

Re: Car only starts sometimes!!

ive added a new battery plus plugs, wires, the distributor shaft cap and rotor and put a new ignition control module as well and a new fuel filter. and it still does this. im going to run that water additive. any more suggestions.
and i mean after it sits it cranks but acts like its starving for gas. but there is spark and the fuel is getting up there. soo yea

Re: Car only starts sometimes!!

Probably already checked this, Is the fuel pump priming with you turn the key over without cranking?

Mine did what yours did, My fuel pump relay wasnt working and the car had to wait to build up oil pressure from cranking so the oil pressure sending unit would send power to the fuel pump instead, So cranking for 5-10 seconds. then starving for gas for a few seconds.

Re: Car only starts sometimes!!

I experienced the same issue(long crank times before starting cold or hot) after I replace the original delco FP with a Carter.

I thought ign module/relay/vac leak etc etc - even though I could hear it prime with the Carter FP.

I put a ACDelco back in and fires up instantly again.
