Was very fast a week ago, now it still runs good but is a dog. Anyone have an idea?

Hey, thanks for reading. I just bought the car and have had it maybe for three weeks. In the last week it started to puff smoke on start up and smells like it's burning oil, it also was very fast about a week and a half ago and now is only fast right after start up. Once the thing warms up it's a dog but still seems to run perfect. At the same time it also developed a tick. That day I had been blowing past cars like they were standing still and then it looked like oil came out the dipstick and that's when the tick developed. Here is some info on the car and what the past owner did to it.

-it was a 305 tpi swapped to a 350 tpi, reusing the original gear I would guess
-has a mild cam
-it took off like a beast before when eased into but would bog down if floored
-very swift from cold but after warmed up it's a dog but sounds great and still seems to run fine
-puffs smoke on start up
-is an 85 so that's probably the injection system since the 350 is from a 77 the original owner said and I know 85's are the only direct fit I believe to older motors.
-ticks on driver side, it sounded like it was from the top and not the valve cover like it was an injector I read on places but that might have just been me hoping it was that.
-sometimes it might stumble from a start but maybe once or twice a week.
-Has two times in the 3 weeks I've owned it started to pop and sputter and lose all power and idle dropped with a check engine light. I just turned off the car both times and gave it three or four minutes to sit then it would start up and run like a beast again.
-I won't lie, I have been running it hard. Not fish tailing or burning out but racing around. I am 21 after all and it's my fastest car I've owned. The last owner did a great job up till this problem started.

I think that's it and sorry for the long list. I just wanna make sure everything is up there. I know a good amount about cars so I had some Ideas but out of my 9 cars in my 3 years with a license I've only had one other fuel injected. All others were 1980 or older so I'm not sure if it might be a sensor or something too. Thanks for any help.

I didn't notice anything odd happen with the car when the oil came out the dipstick. It seemed to run perfectly fine and I only noticed it from the smell. The coolant also looks fine. I just checked it, no discoloration or anything like that and it's all full to the top. For now I'm only using it to get to work which is a half a mile away.

Could be bad injectors or a bad MAF sensor if it isn't speed density.

Congrats on the new car, they are alot of fun to race around in, just keep in mind it is an old car already. To start it off on the right foot it is always a good idea to do a general tune-up: cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil/filter, fuel filter, and air filter.

Don't worry about the puff of smoke on start-up, most of our cars do this.

Oil actually flowed out the dipstick tube? maybe a piston ring let go and is pumping air/fuel past the piston, into the engine. I had a similar issue with my old Jeep engine before it threw a rod.

You can confirm this with a compression check of all the cylinders.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I can't walk to work, I'm the manager so I have to have my car in case I need to make surprise runs for supplies. I was figuring it needed valves seals just from the smoke on start up. My 69 skylark did the same thing I just didn't think it could cause that also. Well thanks, I'll try to take a good look over the weekend and hopefully get it back to perfect soon. Thanks again for the help guys
