My leaky fuel tank

Alright so I posted before about comin areas for a leaky tank in these cars then found out about the recal for the 91/92 cars. I got everything out today and I cannot figure out where this thingis leaking from! It's got dark spots on the dirt showing that it is leakin but it's like in the middle of the tank no where near a seam or anything. I'm gona look for a shop that can check it out for me but at this point I'm strongly thinly about finding a 4th gen plastic tank to throw in. I know I can get a v6 4th gen tank pretty cheap.

Re: My leaky fuel tank

Looks like the joint from the filler neck to the tank needs some solder. I just picked mine up from the radiator repair shop last week for the EXACT same reason. It only cost $80, but unfortunately I had the same thought you did...upgrade to a LS1 tank, better pump, and bucket to keep fuel around pump. Unfortunately there is a national back-order for the proper 0-90 ohm sending unit to retro-fit this tank to our cars, so check into that first...

I hope this helps

Re: My leaky fuel tank

Well I bought the racetronix kit to put back in whatever tank I go with so either way I'll have a better pump. I'm running a 4th gen tank in my trans am right now also but I have the LSX swap in it. Just wondering what all I'll need to do for it to work in my tpi ca soon to be LSX swaped also lol.

Re: My leaky fuel tank

Does the racetronix kit have a fuel sender that is compatible with the TPI fuel gauge? The TPI fuel sender is 0-90 ohms; the LS1 fuel sender is 240-80 ohms. Do you plan to keep the TPI gauge cluster? As for fuel supply and return lines; try to get the original nylon high pressure line from the LS1 tank to LS1 car, and re-use this with a new fuel filter that has a quick-connect and a o-ring connection (available at most autoparts stores). The return line can just be regular fuel line. You will need to shorten the rubber portion of the fuel filler neck by 1.5". Do you have emissions to worry about?

Hope this helps...

Re: My leaky fuel tank

I cleaned the tank pressurized it and found my leak tonight. It is infact at the solder joint. Am I able to resolder it with silver solder an a propane torch or will I be better off to use that stuff that's sold at autozone?

Re: My leaky fuel tank

I asked the guy at the radiator shop specifically about what solder to use. He uses regular lead solder and an electric iron (so as no to set anything ablaze), but I bet if you ensure all the fumes are gone, a propane torch could be safe. Unless the "stuff at autozone" is a solder, don't bother. That tank fix stuff didn't work me in this application.

Good luck.

Re: My leaky fuel tank

I had ran the tank empty before I dropped I then it sat for two weeks in the garage floor with no sending unit in it and no gas cap on. It's pretty drie out.

Re: My leaky fuel tank

In the interest of being fully informed...I dropped off my tank in similarly dry condition and for some reason (probably legal) the tech still wanted to use an electric iron...I wanted to try to torch solder at home, just didn't have the guts...

When your done show us your work.
