Hello and MAF TPI Problem
Hi. Im new to Thirdgen.org, well sort of. Been reading threads on here as a Guest off and on for years and you guys have all been quite helpful with great tech info. Got a Problem now though I cant sort out. I have an 88 IROC-Z28 305 TPI, AUTO, and Ive gone threw at least three MAF's now in No Time. I dont think it could be three bad MAF's Consecutively. Just doesnt seem right. Keeps throwin a Bad MAF Code. Checked wiring, its Good. The Car has had smog pump removed, engine is .040 over, stock cam, cat delete, and plenum has been ported and flowed. Wouldn't think any of these things would throw a MAF Code, at least from everything Ive read would indicate that it shouldn't. Actually when I changed out old 305 and put in fresh 305, it went Months without a single problem. Car still runs farely well other than an occasional High Idle Issue, Eats the Fuel (avgeraging around 8-10 mpg), and sometimes stalls when put into gear. Ive tried all sorts of things, and cant seem to find the problem. Was Curious if any fellow Thirdgen TPI owners have ran across this and have any possible solutions or insight on how I can try to fix this. Any help would be Hugely Appreciated!

Re: Hello and MAF TPI Problem
bad MAF or lean mixture detected by MAF, causing engine to dump fuel? does the car emite a rich exhaust odor that burns the eyes?
best bet would probably be to hook the car up to a scanner and find out what's going on with the motor - see where the other parameters are at.
if it is in fact a MAF issue alone, you may want to re-wire it - the wiring possibly being the common denominator in three purportedly faulty MAF sensors. if not the wiring itself, maybe the [female/wiring side] connection.
were these stock MAF sensors? new? if they're not new, have you cleaned them with MAF sensor cleaner before use? are you running oiled air filters?
these are the only things i can think of off the top of my head. again, best bet, scan all the values on the motor.
are there any mods that you didnt mention in your post?

Yea it does run quite rich, enough that it makes your eyes water.
I visually inspected wiring, but havent checked it with a meter or test light yet.
They were all three Bosch MAF Units from Napa. As far as I could tell they were OE replacements.
I am running K&N Air Filters. Have been since Ive owned the car, which is 11 years. I can see the oil messing up one MAF possibly, but all three?
Nope didnt miss any Mods. .040 over, smog pump removed, cat delete, plenum port & flowed, all OE otherwise.

Re: Hello and MAF TPI Problem
yeah, sounds to me like something is causing a lean mixture, which is being detected by the MAF sensor, causing the ECU to dump fuel.
i dont think that deleting the smog pump and the cat(s) would require a custom chip or anything.
when was the last time you replaced your O2 sensor? if its been a while you might try that since its cheap and easy. aside from that, i would recomend getting the car hooked up to a scanner (not a trouble code reader, but an actual scanner) to find out exactly what's going on rather than throwing new parts at the problem.
good luck.
