external fuel pump ??
external fuel pump ??
after hours of reading post and searching for the answer i am looking for i decided to just ask the question. i want to get away from the in tank fuel pump and go to a remote set up. i will most likely leave the fuel cell in the factory location or use a stock tank. i mainly want to remove the pump from the tank for easier access for repairs. in the last 3 years i have replaced the stock fuel pump 4 times and it has gone out again. any help will be greatly appreciated

Re: external fuel pump ??
About a year ago I posted a thread about going to a Holley external fuel pump no interest. I was thinking of making the conecctions in the fuel lines on the car and building the wiring harness to plug into the stock wiring. I would then keep it in the car after testing it, just as a way to get the car home if it quit while we were far from home. I still might.
Re: external fuel pump ??
the last pump was from napa not sure who made or rebuilt it. the one before was a delco from the dealer. i talked with the guy i bought the car from three years ago today he told me that in the 7 years he had the car he had put 5 pumps in it.i am thinking that the pumps are not the problem. i keep the last pump that i changed out for some reason. so today i took it and hooked it up to a 12v power supply and it ran. so i then i placed it in a 5 gal bucket with some water and anti freeze for a lubricant and let it run. 3.5 hours latter it was still running. so i put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it blew the rubber hose off at 53lbs.not sure what this means but it may not be bad.i think it may be a power problem now but who knows.

Re: external fuel pump ??
Its common for fuel pumps to come "back to life". after failing from worn brushes. After you tap on the pump, they reconnect with the rings on the armature in the motor.
To get a car with a bad pump running, hit the gas tank a few times while cranking and it will usually start and get you home, but don't trust it anymore.

92firebird305; sounds like a different issue than external fuel pump...
Leaking injectors maybe...probably best to start your own thread, so more people can help.
Hope this helps.

Just take a wire and connect it to the G pin in your diagnosic terminal from there run it to the 12 volt acc. in your fues box, when you turn the key to the run possition ou should hear the fuel pump running. And he car should run this way, But This is for only testing or to get the car home in an emergancy situaion.
IF the pump is working look for the problem else where

Re: external fuel pump ??
He could just install a racetronix hotwire kit that will bypass the factory harness cause not a good ground will burn up any pump new or used.
