Suggestions to help maintain when away
Hi guys, I appologize if I don't have the right board but this question doesn't seem to really fit any category. I have an 87 IROC 305 TPI (all original) and I'm going through a divorce. Property settlement already signed so I'm definately keeping the car. Problem is that I moved and for the time being my car is stored in a friend's detached non-climate controlled garage for free while I'm trying to save some money again, but it's about 120 miles away from where I moved. I can only make it up to take the car out about every 4-6 weeks. I have the battery on a trickle charger, put Sta-Bil and some Star Tron gas stabilzers in the tank, and have a low wattage marine fan underneath to help keep condensation from forming on the underbody due to temperature changes that come with a non-climate controlled garage. My last oil change was last June, but it's full synthetic and I've put less than 300 miles on the car since then. She fires up immediately and runs great when I do make it up to take her out. I wanted to ask you all is there anything else I should be doing to preserve my car and prvent any problems until I get a house with a garage again. Sorry for the long querstion, and thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Fog the engine off with cumbustion chamber conditioner. It will help prevent rust from forming inside the engine. You don't need the tricle charger. Just disconnect the battery. I disconnected mine in november of last year and, without putting a charger to it, I reconnected it in march and it fired up no problem. This is after having a battery overcharge and leak acid the previous winter due to a faulty "smart" charger. Some guys like to put moth ***** around their car to prevent rodents from making it their home. You may also want to over inflate your tires a little to prevent flat spotting. That being said I stored my car for a year and a half with the tires at 35psi with no problems. If you do go up there to take the car for a spin, take it for a good long drive. Short drives just create condensation in the exhaust.

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better. Always wanted an IROC from the year I graduated high school, finally got one 5 years ago in my late 30's, and plan on keeping her the rest of my life.

Red pepper the engine bay to prevent rodents and put a few dryer sheets inside the car. Rodents hate that stuff and won't go near it.
