Confused on what TPI engine I have

Okay, so I have a 305TPI from 91' Z28. In searching through old threads it appears many say they made a 215HP(peanut-cam) option with autos and a 230HP (L98 cam) option with 5-speeds. However, in an old repair manual I have it only lists a 230HP version for my year of engine. Also, it lists my valve specs for the cylinder heads at 1.71" Intake and 1.59" Exhaust and only one stock cam option. So is my book wrong? Is the different cam thing just wives tale or what's the deal?
I'm asking because since it's a 305 that I'd like to bump up the HP a little on (maybe in the 270-280 range), I have an issue with sinking too much money into a 305. In other words, I'd like to stay clear of swapping heads. When I read old threads people talk about this cam and that cam adding 40 more HP for example, I can't be sure if they're talking about 40 more above 230 or above 215.
I was hoping I could upgrade my exhaust first and go with shorty headers. Add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 1.5 alluminum rockers, and cam and springs to hopefully get to my desired HP goal. I can't imagine I could eclipse 300 HP mark without cylinder head work. I breifly tossed around the idea of the vette L98 heads but I'd rather not.

So what's the deal?

Thanks

Re: Confused on what TPI engine I have

Hey thanks, this helps out. I guess my book is a little "generic" to say the least. Since I don't know anything about the car the engine came from and I'll be upgrading the cam either way, I'll just assume it has the crap cam.
