What are your goals? It's all about the old adage:

"How fast will it go?"
"How much money you got?"

Re: camming my 92 trans am 305

There is alot of other stuff you can do before you change a cam.

Headers, exhaust, gears, suspension work, etc.

On your note though, you could buy a cam for $200-$250.
Installation would maybe be $4-500 at a garage (4-6hrs of work)

I put in a cam into my stock 305 a long time ago, I wouldnt do it again.

Re: camming my 92 trans am 305

If you have a car that didn't come with the non-G92 spec cam and gears I would recomend following GM's path and stepping up to 3.42 gears. You probably have 3.08 gears if you have a non-G92 option LB9 with the T-5. That will really wake your car up.

As others have mentioned an aftermarket high flow cat, catback exhaust, and headers will also open up the performance envelope on your car as well.

You can also make your own custom cold air intake set up and install a high flow aftermarket air filter. If you do change the throttle body don't go past 52mm. The stock 48mm throttle body works very well on a mild 305 and since TPI was designed for the 305 in the first place the stock 48mm throttle body is not as much a restriction as it would be on a 350 or larger motor.

I would look into aftermarket boxed lower control arms, panhard bar, torque arm, poly bushings all the way around, and new struts & shocks all the way around for the suspension. These basic mods will only add to what thirdgens really excel at in stock form in the road holding department. You have your choice of springs and other components as well if you choose to down the road.

Depends on what your goals are for the car as well - thats just as important as picking the correct matching compoents for your car as well so that you will be happy with the end result. How many miles do you have on your motor?

Just don't forget to have your car in good running order before you start spending money on speed parts. A car that is out of tune, needs a trans or rear end rebuilt, an engine rebuild, or any other kind of basic operational maintenance is going to give you lack luster results when you start doing performance upgrades.

You have a 92 speed density TPI. My advise is that you get the equipment and start learning how to tune before you start throwing parts in. These cars don't compensate for mods as well as MAF cars. You need to learn how to tune even if you are doing something as basic as a full exhaust. Otherwise you will be disappointed with the performance gains from whatever parts you put in.

I have a 91 G92 car similar to yours. I had the engine fully rebuilt with an aftermarket cam and a few other mods. I can tell you that the car felt a little less peppy than stock after the cam swap until I got it tuned and then it really woke up.

Re: camming my 92 trans am 305

i agree..i can tune it im just getting estimates on things and opinions so i know what path to go down, it has 90k miles on the stock engine and i dont want to mess that up so im just doing a little here and there, its kind of my driveable project car

Re: camming my 92 trans am 305

Thats good. 90k miles is just warming up so as long as the drivetrain is in good order you are doing right by planning out your mods on a well operating car to begin with.

This is an old magazine article I found on this website. The site is worth checking out. They have a lot of stock and modified thirdgen related articles and they have documented performance gains.

This article shows some performance gains on a 1990 LB9/T-5 IROC-Z with some basic intake, exhaust, and chip modifications.
