Thinking of maybe going TPI after all
Hey all, been awhile since my last update. My project has been "on-hold" for a few months, due to unforeseen/current financial circumstances, and a deal that went south on a vortec intake base for TBI that thankfully, I got my money back on. Ultimately though, the plan for now is to hang onto the car, and as usual, do some more homework during downtime!
Anyways, as the thread says, I'm debating the idea of going TPI after all w/my project (which was the original plan). Had the idea of running an EBL Flash modded TBI system (and trying to make functional use of a T/A power bulge hood) on top of an L31 longblock, but have the following concerns now...
- Hood clearance issues (especially if a non-drop aircleaner baseplate/TBI spacer is to be used)
- Amount of mods/work needed to make the TBI effective might be better put towards a true port fuel system?
- Only good smog legal intake is the GMPP Vortec one.
I'm already pretty well aware of what parts are required for the conversion for the most part, and that the best way to go is to find a complete system, but just had a few questions.
- How is the stock baseplate? Is it less or more of a restriction in airflow than the stock runners?
- Are the L98 heads good for a decent street car? It's my understanding that Vortecs flow better, but that the L98's with a port job can be a good budget option, and are an affordable option for an aluminum head. Main reason I ask is because of the cost of the Vortec TPI intake base (I have to pass smog, so even the TBI route w/Vortecs would require the fancy stuff in my situation). Not opposed to sticking w/Vortec if it's worth it though.
- Is EBL still a worthy upgrade for the TPI ECM?
P.S: Bear in mind that I'm not trying to build a high-revving, 500+ RWHP monster. Just a fun street driver w/nice, responsive mid-range grunt and great drivability. OH, and I should of course mention I'll be running whatever intake on top of a 350, not the current 305! (It needs a rebuild, just gonna swap instead).
Thanks!
