89 TPI 350 - Distributor rebuild or replace?

Hi guys. I’ve been lurking around here for some time gaining valuable information but I have not yet posted anything.

I’m putting an 89 5.7 TPI into an FJ40 and I have a question about the distributor. The engine ran at one time, although it has been sitting (mostly inside, always covered) for about 7 years. I have not tried to fire it but the pickup coil inside the distributor looks rusty. Should I get a new pickup coil and perhaps a module and rebuild the distributor (since it is on the bench) or replace it all together? I’m all about ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ but, at the same time, I want it to be reliable.

Thanks much,

Lane

I'd probably just clean it up then remove the ICM and reapply heat sink grease, and run it.

I went with this: GM Peformance Ramjet Distributor 1104060 (keep in mind I didn't have a distributor at all). I think it is a reasonable price ($200), comes complete from distributor gear to cap.

Thanks guys! Removed the ICM, cleaned the surfaces, applied some heat sink grease and installed the distributor. After several years of sitting, put fuel and spark to it and it fired right up.
