knocking tapping noise

Ok I have a problem with my daily driver. Its a 91 350 TPI Formula with 76,000 original miles. Their is a kocking tapping sound that happens when climbing a hill or when I put a load on the engine. She also hesitates like she bogging down & I loose power. I have kinda ease the pedal, its like its gasping for air. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,
Karl

Re: knocking tapping noise

Have you checked your base timing with the est disconnected engine warm? Sounds like you are describing pre detonation.

Re: knocking tapping noise

Pinging comes to mind. Check plug wires and cap for cracks. Easier at night to see if the wires are sparking off metal in the engine. Also check the electrodes on the plugs, i dont run platniums for this reason, they like to pre detonate on crap gas, which is out ther this time of year. Have you installed hotter plugs recently? Electrodes after pre ignition like to melt so check this as well. But first and formost easiest thing to check is base timing without getting to much into anything. Hope this helps.

Re: knocking tapping noise

She is due for a tune up...so everything will be replaced & timing checked. Could it be anything else also that would cause her to loose power & bog down. If I feather the pedal shes ok up hills...

Re: knocking tapping noise

A restrictive exhaust low fuel pressure can all have a effect of reduced power under a heavy engine load.

Re: knocking tapping noise

I replaced the fuel pump like a year ago. I have a complete exhaust system for her, just waiting for the cat back to come in. Im going to delete the air pump & air tubes. If it runs better with the EST disconnected, just leave it?

I never said that. I had this same issue with my 1990 vette would rattle like heck and sometimes not want to start. Never found the problem as it came and went but disconnecting the est wire always made the car run better till it decided to get the fart out of it's system.

I kinda think it is the integral est module found in the 7727 and 7730 ecm.
