Carb ---> TPI Starting the planning process pt 1
Hey guys,
I've got a 84 T/A with a mild build 355 that, quite perhaps at tax return time, I'll be converting to FI. I'm just looking at options right now, and this is option 1.
I have already retrofitted a 255lph electric pump into the tank.
Current engine. 355, World Sportsman II heads, Lunati 60121 Cam
3.73 gears, 700R4
ALong with the TPI intake, sensors, fuel rails, ECm and wire harness, what else will I need to get? I know my fuse box has provisions for quite a bit, but would it be easier to run a separate fuse box if needed?
Also, would a TPI be decent for that cam?
My goal is to find out what would be easier/cheaper to do, TPI or something like a Holley Avenger EFI set up or the like. Something that precludes me from putting a new motor in (LS1? ooohhh...maybe someday) Thanks for any and all input!

If a LS1 is in your future, I would just use what I have to get it running if I need a daily driver until I safe the moneyfro a LS1, but an aftermarket EFI would make me just as happy.

I think TPI would be a step backwards... EFI in general is maybe a wise move, but not TPI.
I'd suggest watching the classifieds on this site for a HSR.
The fuse box isn't that much different; the one that would have come in a TPI car just has 2 more fuses, one to supply power to each bank of injectors; pretty easy to accomodate that with in-line fuses. The various other wiring that you don't have will be more of an issue; your existing "engine" harness (gauges, ignition, etc.) doesn't really have to change, but you will definitely need an "ECM" harness. 2 totally separate assemblies in the years before FI was in all of these cars which makes it easy to just pop your carb ECM harness out and drop in a EFI one. Might be easiest to just watch the classifieds for that as well. It also wouldn't be too far of a stretch to use a TBI one and just replace the injector pod harness with ones to 4 injectors each; maybe conisder an aftermarket ECU solution for tuning, such as EBL.

What is your opinion of the Holley Avenger or Edelbrock Pro Flo systems? They appear to use MPFI with a TBI style set up.

Megasquirt can be the cheapest way to run the computer, other than a stock/ junkyard computer. The downside is that there is a lot of research and you need to learn how to at least ballpark tune yourself. The bonus is that you can have more tunability options, sequential injection, NOS control, 3 step rev limiter.
The other option is to get the plug and play computer and intake kits for more money and it does most of the work for you.
