Help L98 350 Build

I am torn on what I would like to do with my L98 350. I currently have 193 heads on the TPI engine block. I know with all the information I have found on the internet says to ditch them. It looks like heads may have had some work as I see crane cams 1.6 roller rockers and appears to be be crane cam valve springs as they have a red stripe on them. So I go to a local shop and they said stop thinking of new heads and get a new cam and I will see a big change. I am confused with the fact of having 193 heads on TPI engine and if I should replace or just do a cam. Anyone have this odd setup and what cam if any would help if they are correct? The price I can spend on heads is almost the price of an rebuilt engine so why not just replace....Any feedback would be nice! I am just looking to make into a street car but fast when I want to burn out. I currently have SLP runners, edelbrock intake, ported plenum and 58mm throttle, 3" exhaust with shorty headers, and hypertech chip. Thanks

Anyone have this odd setup and
Depends how well they have been ported.
Some on here have had good results with correct porting

Re: Help L98 350 Build

I think that in your case a cylinder head upgrade would be the best/easiest way to get an across-the-board performance improvement.
You could keep your old heads as spares.

What is your goal?

What are you wanting to do with the car?

Sell the 193s on CL and find a set of 113s, they are lighter, they flow better then swirl ports, and Chevy designed them for the tpi intake. think 210 HP truck or "245" HP vette

Also I believe a member of this forum has a video of a bone stock l98 vette (113 heads) putting 244 to the wheels.

I just want to have a muscle car that sounds and runs good with what I have. Not looking to race just want a good street car with some power. The cylinder heads seem to have alot of to torque but they are truck heads. Looking at AFR's 180 but would the exhaust headers are edelbrock tes and not sure if they would fit the square type. I was looking at Crane Cam 104224 but think the stock L98 would work until I had a budget to do both

Keep the heads. Get a good cam, and pass go.

No since in spending $1000 on heads for your application. IMHO

heads make the engine. Bad heads=bad power I bought my 113s a few weeks ago for $450. John lingenfelter said that it's better to have optimal heads and a bad cam then good can bad heads. 193 heads are worse then stock tpi heads

Funny, I just read that quote last night in John's book.

I agree heads make the engine, and if this guy was building a race car, I would not hesitate to suggest a good set of heads.

But the quote from the op is,

"I just want to have a muscle car that sounds and runs good with what I have. Not looking to race just want a good street car with some power." I guess if he has a big budget, why not get heads, but I don't know that.

What is your budget, AJ87camaro?

Re: Help L98 350 Build

Of course, you have to wonder, if it has these heads, is the shortblock an L98? Does it have a roller cam? Or did someone just throw a flat tappet truck motor in there?

Re: Help L98 350 Build

L98 or dump truck engine, horsepower is in the heads. as J. Blaze stated the fact that 113's are on your engine does put the rest of the short block into question also. in my opinion, a simple rebuild on a roller block 350, some stock l98 heads with a simple valve job and maybe some light exhaust side work, and ye' old zz9 cam will give you the street car with guts goal you stated in your first post for a reasonable price. not to mention piece of mind in knowing what componants you have top to bottom.

Re: Help L98 350 Build

On the engine block it is stamped V0205SNB which would be from a Pontiac/Firebird or Camaro 5.7 TPI as far as what I found online. When I bought the car was told the engine was pulled from a 88 Pontiac/Firebird. I know that this was drag raced and maybe that is why the 193 heads are on for the lower torque. So again with the engine block number would have to guess it is the stock cam from TPI. The information is pretty clear it is not a truck engine. I will look into new heads for now and was really thinking AFR but the 113 sound like another option for a less expensive build.

Do what you do. Just know some one on here has done it before and will be glad to tell you how to do it properly.

After searching ebay I finally found a set of ZZ4 12556463. The cost was $579 for a pair of used ones and could not pass it up. Can not wait to get them installed!!
