replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

i have an 88 iroc with the l98 that had developed a miss. turns out i was running on 5 cylinders because i burnt up some plug wires.

So i had what ended up being a few brunt up spark plug wires. it took me while to discover that the wires were what the main cause of the engine missing. I replaced the coil, then started the motor and it ran. i then replaced the cap, rotor, and spark plug wires and now the motor turns over tries to start, but will not stay running.

the cap, rotor, wires, and i think even the coil are all the same brand. the wires are 300% positive that they are in the right firing order on the distributor cap, the distributor cap is seated properly and did not contact the rotor inside. the distributor did not move when i installed the cap.

i did have some wires in the wrong spot initially and the motor did backfire. there is also a random wire going to a connector, much like the kind for the O2 sensor. the wire is green and it plugs into a connector that goers to a black wire and it is connected to nothing. i think it may be for the tach signal but im not sure.

any ideas before i have this beast towed to a mechanic shop and get bent over on the price?

Re: replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

I recently had my '91 Firebird in a crank no start condition. I too had changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor and pickup coil not too long ago. Long story short turned out to be the ignition control module (ICM). Pulled it off the distributor and had Autozone check it out just to be sure and it was bad. Replaced it and it started like a champ. Fifty dollars well spent. Good luck.

Re: replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

Ill try and take a pic when I leave for work. If not ill get it on my way back from work in the am. It's a green wire on the side that's going into the harness behind the drivers side head, and black on the side of the connection that is just dangling.

Re: replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

I got a 91 RS quit firing from the distributor all at once. coil to distributor plenty hot, nothing coming out of the distributor. There is ignition control on the firewall. However, correct me here if I am wrong it's been years since the last ICM went bad, But, if the ICM goes bad then there is not any fire right? Coil, distributor, notta!

Rotory button has wear, but no visual damage just wear, Distributor is clean, no visual cracks or burns.

Just wanted to shoot for a second opinion before I change the cap and button to start. Haven't found any wires loose.

Re: replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

From my understanding, ICMs go bad much more often than coils. That being said, when my ICM went bad I didn't have spark at the distributor. It was either the coil or ICM and I pulled the ICM and took it to Autozone to check it. Replaced it. Got my fire back. If you got good fire from the coil to the distributor using a noid light, then I'd have a go at the cap and rotor. Good luck.

Re: replaced cap and rotor and now will not stay running

Ive been messing with the same thing for the past day or so. I replaced everything and got it to run but it was missing. Just for grinns i wiggled the wires going into the coil and it died immediatly. I tried it a few times with the same results. So i let it sit for a min and tryed again. Now it wont start. From what ive read it is the power from the ignition switch to the coil. Its the red wire on the grey wetherpack. Hope this helps.
