86 Iroc timing--added pics of motor
I bought an 86 Iroc with the tpi on it..The car has been sitting for a long time because the owners could not fix it and lost the keys....I replaced the ignition switch and found the fuel pump not working so I clean the tank, replaced the fuel pump, filter, plugs and oil change. Got the car started but has a bad miss and popping threw the TPI,I checked plug wires and locations, cap and rotor are very clean..It sounds like the timing is way off like its way to far advanced, when you try and give it gas it starts popping threw the TPI/air cleaner and when you let off it runs but not smooth......It does not pop threw the TPI when its just ideling.I know in the old school distributers you could just turn it and correct the problem some times......could the computer be telling it to stay that far advanced...????....Please help if you can...Thank.s

Re: 86 Iroc timing
I'm betting injectors are clogged up. Good fuel pressure only means the rail is getting fuel, not the cylinders. Pull the plugs and look read em. Lean will be white-ish.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Re: 86 Iroc timing
checked the timing......its rite on....I changed the plugs when I first bought the car with it not running for a few years...the plugs were all black and really old from never being changed...It has less than 30 min time running sense I replaced everything so I dont think pulling the plugs will show anything yet......When I get time I will pull the valve covers and check the rocker arms It might have a bad valve

Re: 86 Iroc timing
I would check the injectors. The multitecs are a bad dream and especially if it's been sitting. Instead of having them repaired most people just put new ones in. More commonly the Bosch III's. You can try and test for the ohms using a volt meter. Don't recall what they are supposed to be for stock, maybe 12-14? A quick search will tell you.
Re: 86 Iroc timing
Ok,,,went out today to check the valves, rocker arms...After getting everything out of my way I pulled the right side cover.Started the car and they all looked ok but I adjusted them just to be sure and they were fine....Went to the left side and pulled the cover and what do you know..#5 exhaust valve rocker arm was almost all the way off and the push rod was bent..That explains the popping threw the intake..I replaced both parts and adjust all the valves on that side..WOW....it runs great.....Now I just need to finish cleaning the engine bay and painting the valve covers..If I take it off its getting painted...like the rear suspension when I pulled the gas tank....Thanks for all the input on my car...I hope the test drive goes ok tommorrow after I get it together and will let you guys know....Thank's...Ill try and post pics
Re: 86 Iroc timing
heres a few..The car has been setting from 2005 to now...badly faded paint but really nice body with no dents or rust and factory 16 wheels..nothing has been changed on the car all factory parts..even the old stock muffler

The car runs great very solid motor and transmission...cleaned up the valve covers and painted them seems like a waste of time theres so much stuff covering them up but they look much better
