tpi fuel pump questions
I have a 86 iroc/tpi car that sat up for 3 years.
Engine is fresh (less than 1000 miles on it).
Engine is basically stock. I tried to crank it this weekend and it has NO fuel pressure. I can't hear the normally LOUD fuel pump.
The local pull-a-part takes the fuel tanks out of the cars when they receive them and cut a hole in them and leave them on the ground under the car.
Very easy access. There is an LT-1 car and several v6's with nice looking fuel pumps in them...Cheap.
QUESTION: will they work? anyone ever done this before?any mods needed?
PO already cut a hole in the trunk floor for fuel pump access so it will be easy.
thanks
mike

Re: tpi fuel pump questions
The LT1 fuel pump will make adequate pressure for a TPI. Fitting the in-tank unit into your fuel tank may be a chore, however. It MAY be possible to remove the pump from the LT1 tank unit and fit it in place of the original, but those type pumps like to be bathed in fuel constantly, thus the plastic well in the in-tank unit.

Re: tpi fuel pump questions
thanks vader
I did some more research; and i'm gonna go with a ep381 pump out of a late 90's model 5.7 vortec truck.
EP241 = 40gph standard ac delco tpi pump
EP381 = 50-60gph. The EP381’s were manufactured with a new thin magnet design which yielded a lot higher torque than that of the EP241’s. They were specifically designed to work on Vortec & LS1 style engines. Also the current draw on the EP381 would be significantly less than the EP241, less current + less heat = longer life.
I don't think that this will be too much; as there are "many" guys using 255 lph pumps on their cars. I know that it isn't really desireable to put a boneyard pump on a car;;
but a "mans gotta do what he has to" and I ain't scared to try it.
Worst thing that can happen, is that I will have to change it again...
Thanks for your help though.

Re: tpi fuel pump questions
What does it take to change the fuelpump?
Can it be done with the tank still in place?
Is the EP381 a better choice than the EP241 for a stock engine?

Re: tpi fuel pump questions
it means removing the tank from the car (NO ACCESS HOLES,PLEASE). get the rear way up off the ground ,disconnect the shocks from the bottom and the brake line. remove the heat shields and then you can get the tank out.
