knock sensor delete?

The camshaft I want doesn't really play well with the knock sensor, I've seen videos of it in tpi and LT1 engines.

Can I just run it on 91, and get a good tune?
Will that fix the problems.
If I delete the knock sensor, I'll probably also get a gear drive to go in it.

The car will spend it's time mostly on the drag strip, with the occasional cruise around town.

and as a little side question, has anyone used the speedmaster intake? like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevy-SBC-350-TPI-EFI-1957-1986-Ram-Air-Upper-And-Lower-Intake-Manifold-System-/181329849982?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a3819ee7e.

I read that they're just as good as the weiand, and can be ported even more.

Re: knock sensor delete?

if you have a cam....and other supporting mods...it needs tuned anyhow. in the tuning you can make the knock sensor less sensitive or turn it off completely. don't suggest getting gear drive...it sends a lot of un needed vibrations through the engine....a double roller chain is a better upgrade imho

Re: knock sensor delete?

Yeah, that's where I was reading it from.
I just asked it as a side question, that thread is what made me want the intake.

I don't really know, from what I've read its just the noises the cam makes throughout the engine. The knock sensor reads it as knock and retards the timing, killing performance.

If it doesn't do that, then great. Now all that's left its to find a shop locally that can tune EFI engines.
No way I'm driving 500 miles just for tune.

Yes it is sound that the knock sensor is picking up...and it thinks that a knock is occuring, and retards the timing.....but this usually only occurs with a larger camshaft, and less with rollers. Larger cams, roller rockers, headers and such produce noise that the ks can pickup. my engine (not the exhaust) actually makes a lot of noise with everything....I had the ks desensitized and it doesn't pickup on ghost signals anymore. If tuned correctly the air/fuel mixture shouldn't change much as you still want to achieve that 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio...so the o2 should be reading about the same as with a stock profile cam.

Re: knock sensor delete?

back in 1992/3 when i sent my camaro Z28 to Lingenfelters for there stage 5 upgrade. we did away with the knock sensor (retard 0/0) if it picked up anything. knock wise.
as the cam was a mech roller

also i run a gear drive pete Jackson. (Quiet type)

the vibrations to the top end only. comes into play when the eng is holding a RPM ..like in NASCAR eng running. 7000 rpm for like min/hrs at a time then its only slight...and why today you have big doller Dampers..(i have sold 2 or 3) to guys on this site..ATI super Dampers..(i sell them for like $215)new.when i get them.(for less new). never seen why they sell for $350+ (i paid $375 for one a few weeks ago) for the new eng.as i wanted to drop the damper down to 6.5 lbs from 8lbs..every bit helps..anyway.

my top end also looked like new after all the years. beatn on the eng also.
and there was lots of top end runs on the freeway. for after car show dinners with the guys...

even sold off all the parts on this sight to members...100% happy.
with what they got...

LPE showed me the diff with a chain..belt drive and grear drives.
and i wanted somthing that would hold up..after 8 years of beatn on the eng. when i took it apart the gear drive was still like new! and even went into the new 427 sbc eng.(new cam plate. and button)

iv run belt drives in my truck and ya just think about them braking...
never have had one do it.. ....but ya still have to watch/check the belt and at $100 a belt..whell. my DD has a Double roller chain.

ya wana run what ya wana run...just do it and have fun.
if ya use a chain...pay the $60+ and get a good one!
