Charcoal Canister
Charcoal Canister
I looked high and low and don't have an answer, so maybe you guys can help. I'm in California, so I need to pass smog.
The charcoal canister appears to have holes... holes... in the side where the plastic has rotted. I found a few part numbers, but they've all been discontinued.
can I cobble together a system that works using a generic canister? Is there somewhere else that I should be looking? The plastic on these is old enough... would a bone-yard canister be worth even installling?

If only... So if I get that one, how do I plumb in the electronic solenoid that is on the top.
I found this one that looks close...

Are these different between the v6, 305 and 350 motor?

Has anyone taken one of these apart? Is it the sort of thing that I could replace the canister with a metal (spun aluminum maybe) canister and silicone or otherwise seal it up? I have a couple of lines on used parts, but I would love to machine it out of something more durable.

Re: Charcoal Canister
I read that one before, but I wasn't sure if I had the same one, since it's a California car, and the system is supposed to be sealed... It looked like his was not sealed, but open to the atmosphere on the bottom. I suppose I should just pull it apart and have a look.

Re: Charcoal Canister
None of the GM charcoal canisters of this era are sealed. They are all vented to the atmosphere. As such there is never a pressure build up in the canister.
As for your question of which canister to get. They not only varied over the years, but also varied for different drive-trains of the same year.
