Last I checked with the local F-Body salvage yard, they wanted 1600 for a 700R4/L98 combo, but no computer or wiring harness. I'd guess street value should be 1/2 that.

yeah, i wouldn't pay more than a grand considering you have no idea how tired either part really is. 100k miles of indeterminate treatment is more than enough for you to be buying a dead engine and fragged tranny. Look at the longblock/tranny as cores, and figure $4-500 for the TPI set-up w/ harness/ECM. Closer to 800 total would be about right, as mike said, 1k would be my limit if you actually open 'em up and they both look used yet clean/in order. I say 'used' b/c it'd be real easy to refill a burnt up tranny to make the fluid look pretty, same for running some solvent through the engine to make it look clean...

He might let me pull the a valve cover but that's probably the limit, I was assured the motor and tranny were in running condition when the car was wrecked.
Would a leak down test be something I could do? The engine is out of the car and sitting outside, but covered.
Thanks for the info and please keep it coming!

I just got a 89 vet engine with 40k for 1000 at the salvage yard here no wire harness with it. I would at least check the compression on it. I dont like to put a engine stright in the car from a salvage yard with the vet engine the compression was good but we still took out the crank took some emerycloth and polished it up and gave it a new set of barings and re sealed every thing the only gaskets not replaced was the head gaskets we also changed the oilpump and water pump. If it was my engine I would also have honed the cylinders out and gave it a new set of rings but the owner of the car is trying to sell it and didnt want to spend any more money on it and I already had the other parts.
I payed a 1000 for a 89 vet engine with 60k on it with no harness. I would check the Compression and if you get it you may want to go threw it resael every thing and mabe pull one of the barring caps and take a look at them as well.
