help with code 36
I have a 88 gta 350 tpi
I am getting a randon code 36
it has a new mass sensor this year
I don't want to start replacing parts for nothing
does it just need a new burn off relay???

Re: help with code 36
You need to go through the tests in the FSM. It could be the burn off relay, the power relay, or the MAF itself. Or the wiring or the ECM.
The burn off function isn't important or even very useful. You can also just tune it out with a custom PROM.

Re: help with code 36
I think the word you were looking for is "intermittent".
"SES" stands for Service Engine Soon.
Please find the "shift", ".", and "," buttons on your keyboard. Super helpful.
The light is "intermittent" because the computer doesn't always run the burn-off function, and on some years it only throws the code after it counts multiple failures (IIRC, it's 6).

Re: help with code 36
Mine too has a random SES light that stays on for a few drives, then turns off. Soon to return though.
I have a Spectre thin film element MAF. Recently went through this with Code 34 and Code 36. Code 34 was being caused by a leak in the air intake down stream of the MAF. Code 36 was a bit more challenging going through all the tests. I found there is a signal returned to the computer to "Spoof" the burn off function, but the thin film doesn't need this function. The signal was not consistent, apparently returning the proper Voltage sometimes and others not. Once it falls out of spec, the computer needs to see so many good cycles (I think the number was 50, but don't quote me on that) before it would turn the code off.
My plan was to turn it off in a new PROM as I need a few other items addressed, but I have also ordered and original equipment wire filament style MAF to put on the car once I get the rear brakes sorted. The filament style MAF's are not what the parts stores stock anymore. So, chances are since you have a new one, it is not the original style.
