Gas Smell

Original owner - 1988 IROC 5.7 - When I shut off the car I smell fuel. I have identified one fuel injector that possibly may be leaking. My question is this, I hear a faint buzz in the area of the fuel injector that I believe is leaking. This injector is also near the fuel regulator. Can this leak be from the fuel regulator? Do it make such a noise if faulty? Any input and recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks !

Re: Gas Smell

Need some more information. Does it take awhile cranking on it to start the engine? Do you need to press the accelerator pedal while cranking to get it to start? Does it reek of gas when finally started? Do you get fuel smell/gas when disconnecting the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and plenum? If the injectors and FPR are originals they are probably due for replacing anyway and best to do them together.

If the car starts normal/without hitting the gas pedal I am thinking you may have a bad vacuum line to your charcoal canister (big black cylinder located in front fender area with vacuum lines leading in) or the canister is simply not working anymore. If you check those vacuum lines I bet when you touch them they get black dust all over your hands etc. and just need to be replaced. Those things get very brittle with age and could be passing fuel vapor before it can get to the canister.

Re: Gas Smell

Make sure you are smelling around the car. Purge canisters are known to cause headaches. Could be venting exclusively from the tank at the cap.

Any running issues? If yes may be raw fuel sucked into the plenum from the FPR, you would smell gas in the vac hose.

Re: Gas Smell

Might not be a bad idea to remove and clean the fuel tank vent valve located underneath near the tank. Mine used to make random noise when sitting trying to vent but after being careful taking it apart and cleaning it that problem was solved.
