Timing issue?

I've been chasing a stall and idle issue for a while on my 91 firebird 305 tpi 5 speed. It would run great and sometimes after being warm or running for a long time it would idle high for 5 min then stop. And it would stall if I ran it up high about 4.5k rpm and then put in the clutch or neutral it would bog and sputter and stall, but it would be fine as long as it was in gear. We ruled out the fuel system and injectors and it had a code 42 a couple of times. It also ran all lopey and retarded like it had a cam after it stalled one time. Has new icm, cap and rotor and wires and tps, iac, and map sensor also been timed. Any idea what could cause a stall or timing issue like that? So what should I go for first, a distributer, coolant temp ect. Thanks for any answers

Re: Timing issue?

My minimal experience with TPI idle problems have all been related to faulty TPS and/or IAC. I see you said both of those are new. However, I have bought new parts of each and had the new ones bad out of the box. The worst part about owning these old cars is just about every replacement part is junk these days.

So how did you fix your timing issue if every part is crap? I used ac delco for most parts what was your solution?

Re: Timing issue?

The AC Delco TPS I tried was defective right out of the box. Ended up returning my two year old junk Autozone TPS for warranty and got another working one. Got my money back on the AC delco unit.

Replaced the old IAC with a new Autozone part. The new part was worse than the old one. Put the old one back on and lived with it. No idea what I'll do when it finally craps out.

This is the trouble with these old TPI systems. When they run right they are great, but if you drive them much you will constantly be chasing gremlins and parts. Not advocating a change to carburetor, but I never have these gremlins with my carbureted Camaro.
