Make sure fuel tank is at least half or full. They did not put baffles in the fuel tanks until 1990, could be starving the fuel pump. Happened on my 89 GTA.

 

yesterday I filled up. at cruising speed the car runs well. if I accelerate the car responds well. when I brake strong engine warning light on and the car dies. error code 24. thanks for your help

 

Code 24 is for the vehicle speed sensor reading low when the ecm thinks it should be higher. Basic troubleshooting for that is....If the code was logged when the vehicle was in motion, the following should be checked:

1) Defective or corroded VSS connections
2) Maladjusted TPS sensor. The TPS should read about 0.42 volts at closed throttle
3) Defective speedometer cable
4) Bad or missing speedo drive gear(s) in tail shaft housing of the transmission
5) Defective VSS
6) Defective ECM

I don't particularly think it's the cause, I think it's a result. Main suspects to me are a brake booster leaking vaccum, loose wiring or ground, or loss of fuel pressure (as suggested earlier)
