TPI tune up

About to pick up my new to me 87 Formula 350 from the body shop.

I want to do a good tune up but have been out of the third Gen game for a while. Any specific plugs, coil, wires, etc that I should use?

25 years ago it was Taylor wires and an Accel super coil but I’m sure there is something better out there.

Stick to AC Delco for the coil, the aftermarket “high performance” stuff seems to crap out fast compared to the Delco stuff and unless your running a real hot set up not worth it. Same for the wires but if you want bigger than 7mm Taylor or DUI make good stuff but if just a cruiser AC Delco would fit the bill. Plugs…everyone has an opinion on them and I myself run AC Delco Rapidfire platinum and have no complaints but honestly if I was to do it again would use the standard copper AC Delcos and call it a day and save some $. If you ever need an ignition control module definitely stick with OE or Delco, the other brands really don’t last from what I’ve read on here.

Actually Pertronix stuff is really good. Their module and coil as a combination is very potent and reliable (I've had them for a couple of years now).

but you will notice a difference in driveability and throttle response over a stock module and coil. I used to think the high performance modules were gimmicks until I tried theirs.

Re: TPI tune up

Thanks guys- this is a pretty stock car so this points me in the right direction. Supposed to pick it up tomorrow from the paint shop. Would like to get the tune up parts on order soon.

That is good to know Petronix is making quality stuff, I’ve heard a lot of bad stuff on here about Accel modules and MSD ignition parts failing very early.

Re: TPI tune up

I pulled the distributor out of mine a couple years ago and was kind of shocked at how nasty it was inside. Might take a close look inside yours, parts are not real expensive and might save problems down the road. Also removed one screen in the MAF and gave it a good cleaning.

I use the MSD, the Blaster coil, the stock replacement style. I have had it in the car for over 5 years and no problems. I also use their Supper Conductor 8 mm wires, MSD rotor and cap and the AC Delco Rapid Fire plugs. I used a Jegs hi RPM ICM and it failed within 2 years or less. I replaced it with the A/C Delco and has been good since,
For your application The stock A/C Delco replacements will be just fine. I was doing a engine detail with red as my primary color so I chose MSD for that reason but I am happy with their stuff.
