Hey guys and gals, need to set up the timing on my 86 Trans AM 305 TPI, so if I remember correctly stock timing is 6 degrees and what am looking for is to get some more power out of this (305 come alive). I was thinking about 10 to 12 degrees?
Thank you

You might not want to go past 8 base timing

This type of question gets asked here a lot.
Initial timing matters only when the total timing is known. Find out what the total is first, before you base your adjustments on initial....

Hi,

This is an old trick. Bump up initial timing which will trick the TPI ecm to miscalculation resulting in more timing. Get "some more power"? How much more power really? 3 HP at the wheel? Those '86 305 TPI were 190HP from factory.

Problem I see is you are shooting in the dark not knowing what the engine is doing right now. Only a data log would tell you that... and maybe a dyno session. You might already have a bunch of knock retard at WOT which can only be exacerbated if you add more timing. If the engine is stock, they are quite rich at WOT from factory and.... yes, they detect knock events whether real or not resulting in knock retard.

My 2 cents worth
Peace
