found a Jasper engine under the hood...
So I have known for a while that my 88 IROC vert has a Jasper remanufactured engine.... so I have been digging more... called Jasper but they couldn't tell me anything since its more than 6 years old... (really?)
Looks like a long block was used... intake manifold, exhaust, and TPI setup all transferred over.
It is a 305... correctly as it should be... but i found 187 heads... should be 081 heads. Because this car is rare and special...(G92 vert) my plan is to find a set of 081 heads and have then redone properly. Since i have to pull the tranny this coming winter, might as well just pull the engine too... and all my reading says the 081 heads are better (have those on my 92) as they are not swirl port heads.
I am seeing a lot of 081 heads off of MercCruisers... any reason a boat head would differ?
Does anyone make original cams anymore or should i just go with a good computer cam (as i have done in the past)...?
The engine could run better.. was not super happy with it on the run from upstate NY to Carlisle for the GM Nationals where it was a feature car last month.... made me a bit nervous... this is my chance to take it apart and get it right.. but i want it to be (and look) mostly stock.... for this car.
thoughts?.... i got time until this comes apart in Nov...

Old GM heads aren't "junk" to a lot of people...
As for the question at hand, Jasper seems to have used whatever was easily available that was somewhat comparable to the factory-installed parts for the application. Much like any other rebuilder. You are actually a little lucky if both of your heads are the same casting #.
Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the head casting #. As long as the engine is healthy, runs well and is presentable, just keep enjoying the car. If it has drivability issues, that's going to be a different issue than which heads are in use.

Found a set of 081 heads and just dropped them off at the shop.... Almost no machine or resto shops left.... Everyone left is 70+ years old.... Kind find anyone to work or to buy the business.
Think I will be out of the car hobby soon if I have no shops left .. like hobby shops, seems to be a dying business ...in a year or two there will be nowhere left to even get a basic head rebuild done.....
I plan to pull and freshen up the engine this winter... Drop on the the 081 heads.....
But if I cant get the mortgage needed for a new camshaft..... $500+!!!! $800 with lifters.....
