14102187 swirl port WITH TPI

I have a 305 and I just want to try out something before I get new heads. I may actually use 601's but I'm not sure so I want to run the stock tbi heads with my new [to me] tpi from a 91. everything is there - wiring harness, everything.
i know it will be a direct bolt up and i have a zz4 cam, pushrods, springs, and will get the 1.6 rockers.
i doubt i will be using them for long, but i don't plan to go over 4500 rps, well not very often.
i also have some new 2055 headers and a new exhaust to go with it.
will probably blow it up before to long but thought i would be able to play now.
not even going to take the engine out and redo the mains or anything else.
i will pin the head studs, cause it cheap and easy.
do you think the heads will work ok with the rpm limitation?
what i really want is edelbrock 58cc aftermarket vortec heads, but i may get new runners and go with iron vortec heads, or drill the heads themselves.
lots of options but i just want to see if it all runs together.
any major problems anyone sees other than swirl port is junk for any real rpm's, but i'm looking for torque not rpms.
any comments are always appreciated.
i will take it down and have a new prom made up.

I dont think you need 1.6 rockers on top of the zz4 cam with those heads. They probibly dont flow enough at higher lifts to make use of them. The zz4 cam might be too much for such a low max rpm too.

Re: 14102187 swirl port WITH TPI

thanks. got the cam already and want to see if any change. i also want to put the tpi on to make sure it runs ok.
thinking of 601 heads but it takes a lot of work to polish them and do some other things.
the zz4 will run higher than 4500 - it will also get upto 4500 very fast compared with what i have in it stock.
just playing until i get down to some real changes.

Re: 14102187 swirl port WITH TPI

Much has been written on this board about 187 and 081 heads over the last several years. Recently, the 187 heads are not as maligned as they use to be. However, they are not for high RPM applications, or that is to say there are better heads to choose from.

I replaced the engine in my car before I discovered the wealth of information found on this website. If I had known back then what I know today I would ordered a replacement engine from GM with 081 heads or have gone with a short block and gotten other heads or have gone to a 350. Oh well you live and learn.

That being said I am satisfied, for this engine, with the 187 heads because I do not race the engine at high speeds much. I have completed what I want to do to this engine and at the end of the month I am having my car put on a dyno. Stay tuned for the results.
