How do I advance my timing???

I just had my intake seals done and the guy retarded the timing a bit so now it stalls sometimes at idle,I was told that advanceing the timing would solve this like 8 degrees or something, doesn't it have to do with turning the distributor,I remeber doing it on y dads 63 nova SS.how would I do it on a 86 305TPI by myself, the guy wanted $115 plus labor to so it for me,**** that!!!!!!!

Well I am not sure if that will solve your problem but here is how you do it.

First you need to get the special wrench to reach the dist. hold down bolt. It is not very expensive and you should be able to get it at any auto store. The size is 9/16.

Second there is a single wire running across the top of your heater box, I think it is orange. You have to disconnect this wire, otherwise the timing will move all over the place.

Start the car check your base timing, turn the car off loosen the dist. hold down bolt. I think you turn the dist. counter clockwise to advance the timing, I cannot remember for sure. tighten it back up and check it again, repeat until you get the timing you want. You can turn the dist. with car running if you like.

Do not forget to plug the EST wire back togethor when you are done, the check engine light will come on when it is disconnect.
But it will go off once you plug it back in.

I like to run around 12-13 deg of timing

The EST is tan with a white or black stripe. Orange is an always hot line on GM cars ie 12V constant.
