To advance or to not advance?

Read sig for the ride.....

I have added a MSD 6A and a good set of wires. where should I run my timing? Its supposed to be 6* adv. stock, but if I run a wider plug gap and let's say 8* adv. won't I theoretically make more cylinder pressure and therefore more power?

I have a custom PROM from TPIS that has an agressive advance curve already. Could I potentially run into knock retard? I guess I will just have to set it with a scanner and watch the retard.

:hail: I just answered my own question

You can advance base timing to what the motor likes as seen by time slips. I like to also use my scanner to assure no knock counts pulling timing at WOT.

With that ignition you should be able to gap to .045" or so. For a little more HP try cutting back the ground electrodes on the plugs. The method is on my site:
http://www.geocities.com/jgkov/index.html

I run a HyperTech coil/cap/rotor in both cars along with performance wires and cut back plugs. I gap them to .045"-.048". My time slips consistently show close to 1mph gain at the traps or about 10hp over non-cut plugs.

You want to run the minimum amount of timing consistent with your best MEASURED performance. Extra advance beyond that just peaks the cylinder pressure earlier and actually fights the piston coming up.

If you regularly change/check your plugs there isn't any real harm in cutting back electrodes. I do it myself when bored, only takes a couple minutes w/ a dremel.
