best mods for under 500
best mods for under 500
Hey guys,
I have had my car for about 6 months now and it has done me good up till then. But now it needs some more power. I haven't done any performance mods myself, but some were done by the past owner. What would be the best mods to do for under 500 dollars with the most amount of HP gain. Labour won't be a problem because I can do all that myself at school or at home so just the cost of parts. Oh yea, I do live in Canada so if some of the fellow canadians could put in a little bit of input that would be great.

Here in the states just about every individual mod is under $500.
The first thing I'd do is headers and exhaust.
If you do things yourself rather than pay someone it tends to be a little lighter on the wallet

I would do these mods:
Cold air kit (info can be found on this site)
SLP airfoil
Tune-up (cap/rotor/wires/plugs/fuel filter) set TPS voltage, clean the Throttle Body (with carb cleaner), and clean the IAC.
Check sensor output with a scan tool if your school has one.
Spohn sub frame connectors and lower control arms.
In my opinion the suspension mods are a must with 4:10 gears.
If you live out of the lower main land you can take off your smog equipment and cat.

I would change the lower intake manifold since the OEM manifold was originally for the 305 in mind. And with whats left over, I would save it for the headers. The cheapest place for the edelbrock tpi manifold is summit racing.

Some people don't read sigs. By 80 series I'm assuming you have a catback. So I'd say headers and a cam would be the next best mods. Intake work probably comes close behind. I came about 30 hp short of a guy running vortec heads and the SDPC base on a chassis dyno with my setup. We were running stock cams on both, so that gives some idea how restrictive the runners are. I was also getting 30 degrees of knock retard from a header collector that was hitting. Later

Personally Im doing the whole how fast can you go with out touching the motor thing. I'm saving up for a complete Spohn rear susupension. I got a lil company in Winnipeg called fasttoys that is a reseller for Spohn. Kinda hopin to start a Winnipeg GP on Spohn parts as i know me and 2 others are interested in it. But that requires the almight dollar which is getting smaller and smaller to the American Greenback. I already have KYB AGX adjustables on all 4 and Eibach Pro-kit. The other thing i want is a Vigilate Converter and Trans-Go shift kit. I'm hoping all that combined with some sticky tires will get me into the mid to low 13's. Then maybe just maybe i'll drop in my secret weapon. My hopefully one day gonna be LT1 Asperated 406. That a big someday though.

Hey
There are 2 airfoils that u can get. One that goes on the TB and the other one goes in the air induction tube.

I think 89_RS_MIKE hit it right on the nose. Here's some more ideas...
You might wanna increase your base timing a couple degrees too (info can be found on this site)
Maybe an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (TPIS.com)
I would say skip the airfoil, but they are on sale at SLPonline.com, so go for it.
SLP headers would be your next step, but they are very hard and time consuming to install.
You could do intake runners or base too, but neither will help you much by themselves so you would have to get both (expensive).

i believe its in the most recent issue of hot rod, anyway it has the best bolt-on mods for tpi's, and a bunch of other cars too. i think the first thing it recommends is exhaust (headers, cat, and cat-back)

the afpr is a definate but since your on a budget look on the site and it will tell you how to modify your stock one to make it adjustable, save you about 50+ and when you decide on parts look to the almoghty ebay and classified adds on here to see if you can save the almighty $$
