Never Again !!!

I am currently putting TPI on my car and am stuck once more. I had the original key from the car i took the computer out of and i have a vats interrogator. The interrogator read that it was a #11 resister pellet. So i bought one and cut it. But when i go to try to power up the car, i get nothing. My buddy has a diagnostic scanner and it keeps on coming up vats problem. I am getting no power to the fuel pump. I tried every value on my interrogator to power up the car but all 15 values failed. I have no idea what it could be now. Anyone ever do this run into this problem??? I have been setting here for three days trying to figure this one out. Any clues?...suggestions??

vats

I think the vats is it's own module and sends the ecm a fuel enable signal. now I think you should be able to use your origanal key from your car. The only thing that I can think of why it isn't working is because the module locks up after so many wrong trys and you have to leave the key in the run positon for ten min. before you try another code yes it is a pain and watch the battery dosen't die.

So what you are saying is that the vats value is not stored in the ECM then ?? (meaning the vats is not on the prom chip in the ECM??)

VATS does NOT control the fuel pump, only the starter and fuel injectors to the best of my knowledge.

Did you check for the "Vats" code after each try; the ECM stores the code of course.

You can get a Vats bypass to check the rest of the system; come back to this issue on weekends after all else is well and it's running again. Then it won't be such a PITA.

The fuel pump should run for 1.5-2.0 sec after you turn On the key to prime the fuel rail. After the engine starts the oil pressure sw maintains power to the pump.

To test the FP relay, fuse and pump connect +12Vdc to pin "G" (lower left) of the ALDL. You should hear the pump run and measure pressure at the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail.

Lets try to get it started for now.

ok it's fairly simple. I'll find your problem or I'll help you find it yourself . The thing is with pellet resistence, people read it incorrectly with ohmeters. my resistence was 513 ohms and it wasn't a valid list value. I tried to make my resistence and I wasn't understanding what was going on until I found at that the resistences I was made was 5130 ohms. so check that out, it could be that.

VATS controls 2 things , Fuel Enable signal to ECM (50 htz) and start Enable relay signal (connects to start enable relay) So it is normal that your fuel pump doesn't work .

Now if everything is cool and everything is plugged properly and you don't get a security light signal, it means that the vats module as a problem or once again the value is not correct or the wiring job you did is incorrect.

There's nothing else to say about it. the VATS is simple. Check this out: (it's for a passkey II) it's not the same as yours butl as you can see there isn't that much to plug incorrectly.

A1 Orn Power feed from ECM BAT fuse #4
A2 Pnk Power feed from ECM IGN fuse #5
A3 DK BLU Fuel enable signal
A4 YEL/BLK Starter enable relay control
A5 GRY "Security" indicator lamp control
B5 BLK/WHT Ground
B7 PPL/WHT Ignition key resistor return
B8 WHT/BLK Ignition key resistor feed

When I swapped a 92 TPI/ECM into my 89 RS I bypassed the VATS. Sounds like you are trying to keep it working. I understand there is a seperate ECM black box under the dash.
I had to pull the driver side kick panel where the hood release is. There was a three wire fuel pump relay connector (or something to that effect). I had to jump connector one to two then two to three. The car started. Got the info from the harness company, Painless.

Rob, that's because you're PROM is VATS free....on stock ECM it needs the vats to work. The module in the side kickpanel is the Start Enable Relay . this lets the engine crank . it doesn't give fuel or a 50hz signal ...

Simple solution : www.fastchip.com

Ed will burn you a chip specifically for your cars specs and in the chip, he can disable VATS for you. More performance and no VATS problems, cant beat that with a stick!
