Car: 1988 Trans Am GTA
Engine: 5.7L TPI (L98)
Transmission: 700RJunk
I haven't done it but it shouldn't be that hard. Most people who have made their own set-ups have got by just fine with 3" air conditioning duct tubing. Someone here, i don't remember the name, had a sweet set-up made polished 4" custom mandrel-bent pipe. SLP also makes a kit but its a rip off. It'll give you a respectable gain over the stock aircleaner....more so for us firebird guys.

Car: 1988 Vette; 1988 IROC Z-28
Engine: 350cid; 305cid
Transmission: 700R/4; 700R/4
Axle/Gears: 2.59; 2.77
I just cut off the bottoms of the air filter boxes, leaving about 2-3". I ran 4" dia Al flex tubing (like large dryer vent tubing) doen from the boxes, in front of the radiator and behind the fogs. I was able to "form" the flex tubing to fit between radiator and the corss-piece so that no cutting other than air filter boxes was necessary. This means the ducting is square within the boxes, rather flat down below and oval behind the fogs. If you want to be "neat" you can form a scoop to blend from the ducting to the fog light openings. For a few $$ at Home Depot you can't go wrong.
Your estimate on HP gain is good, and then in the last 1/8mi.
The only down-side is that I have to clean the K&Ns more frequently (no screens). I've never been bothered by water getting through the tubing and K&Ns; I've driven in hard rain storms and through standing water.
