Pinion Bearings?

I've had a screaching on my rearend for awhile now. At first it wasn't too bad. Now it is real bad. I too it in my my mechanic, and he said it was the pinion bearings. I don't think he took anything apart, he could tell this by listening. Do you guys think this is right? Also, a seperate shop that specializes in rearends quoted me $680 to replace all my bearings. Is this really high or is it just me? IF anyone has a complete third member for sale in the midwest let me know, cause that'd probably be cheaper. Let me know your thoughts on all this guys.

i'd think it'd be hard to pin point a bad pinion bearing, but not a bad bearing in the center section. i'd think 150 for parts (richmond instaltion kit) and 3 hours labor ought to cover it
