best way to explain a Torque Converter!!!

Engine: 355 HSR
Transmission: Pro-Built 700r4 w/ 3400 converter
Axle/Gears: 10 bolt w/ 3.42 gears
best way to explain a Torque Converter!!!
ok..... i have a buddy who wants a TC.... and asked me to explain what they actually do to him... well.... i personally don't know much about them..... except that they are a big help to an automatic tranny in term of actually getting power to the ground. so what i am looking for is explainations of what a TC is and what they actually do.... thx for the help in advance!!
