Sounds like broken tranny mounts for everybody. Yes this is bad, the jump is your transmission trying to come through the floor to say hello. Everytime it does this it is stressingthe hell out of your u-joints on the drivesahft as well. Replace your tranny mount ASAP, and in the meantime, take it easy on it or else you're going to be posting about how your driveshaft fell out in a few days.

For info on changing the tranny mount do a search. It's is a very common topic.

Or it could be that your idle rpm is too high..

so, lemme get this straight - the lurch from park/neutral to putting it into gear (rev/drive/OD/1/2) is bad? It means a busted tranny mount?? If this is true - how difficult is it to replace the tranny mount?? More info/experiences would be great, as I personally lack the time to check this out thoroughly! Thanks!

You're kidding, right Ed?

Every automatic carbed car I've *ever* driven has jumped when put into D. A pathetically low stall converter and a high engine rpm when on the choke will do it.

Sure, I suppose it could be a busted tranny mount... but the few cars I've driven with a broken tranny mount didn't actually do that--they simply clunked hard when you went WOT or let off the gas at WOT.

Whoops, guess i was half asleep when i read that this morning. Coulda sworn the first post said it jumped whenever he put it in gear and hit it or something, i definitely thought i read a more dramatic symptom than that

I can see that .

We've got a '79 vette, smogger 350, TH350 trans. When that car is on high idle, you better be damn sure you've got your foot on the brake good when you shift into D. Even then, the car "squats" noticeably. Once it's on low idle it's not as bad, but it you can still feel it. I really doubt anything is wrong with it.
