Hey guys! I was wondering if the internals from a 4th gen rear could be swapped into a third gen rear. My car has a 3.08 drum rear in it factory. Wondering about carrier and all out of a 6 speed car with the 3.42 gear being swapped directly into my housing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

 

YES, but will have to be set up. Check the depth of the pinion on the 4th before you remove it. Then check it again, after you install it in yours. It has to be with in a couple of thousands or it will make noise. You may luck out, and it will be a direct swap. I've had to change pinion and or side shims going from one housing to another, even on gm gears.

 

Thanks! I actually realized today that I do have the posi rear in my car (looked at my RPO's again!), so I may just buy new gears from northern auto parts for like 130 bucks. If I do end up swapping in a 4th setup, I will take your advice. Thanks.
