tranny 3rd 4th doesn't engage
Hey guys was hopping someone out there could help me. My Tranny (700R4) in a 1985 I ROC-Z that i just bought sunday, won't shift into 3rd or 4th. When put into drive it jolts forward a little bit, thenwhen driving normal, it shifts high at about 3000 to 3500 rpms into 2nd, and then after it gets to about 3500 to 4000 rpm in 2nd it seems like its going to shift into 3rd but doesn't instead it seems like its in nuetral, it was real low when i bought it, needed 3 quarts, but it was sitting for some time, niot being driven, then last night i put a filter and all new fluid in last night, a little smother in shifting but not so much better, the bottom of the pan had some grainy stuff in it, not too much, less than i'd say medium amount, don't know how to describe that one, but the fluid was pretty dirty. I was wondering if i probably need a complete rebuild, if it sounds like it might be linkages or anything semi easy. Then i could do some research if it sounds like i might be able to do it. Otherwise if anyone out there has a 700R4 in good condition or recently rebuilt for sale or laying around, i would be very interested, please e-mail me than at bilt2serve@aol.com with any info, thanks a A LOT. -BRAD-
In a word, yes. The VB sounds like it is sticky from the friction material that no doubt came from your 3-4 clutch pack.
As a matter of fact I have a 700-R4 that I custom built for my old '86 305 Firebird that I took out when I got rid of it. It is in perfect condition but then again I am in Upstate New York (outside Rochester) and have no way of knowing where you are or how you would get it. This has the 9 clutch alto 3-4 pack, TransGo Shift Kit and Hi Rev Pump Ring Kit, etc. THis is calibrated for lower WOT shift points than the IROC but that is easily remedied.
I am leaving for NYC this AM so I won't be back till Sunday if you are interested or have more questions.
