from 2..73's to 3.42's or 3.73's

Im changing out my ring and pinion gears in my 91 camaro and I was wondering if 3.73s would be too low of a gear for a tpi 305??Would I be better off going with the 3.42's?? I do mostly city driving, I work in the city I live in so Im not to worried about gas cost althought I do make trips every once in a while down to Austin from Ft.Worth(about a three hour drive).I was just wondering you alls opinion on which would be better for a pretty much stock tuned port 305??I think that Im going to go with the 3.42's because of the Austin factor but Im just needing advice for me to lean one way or the other. Thanks

If you are interested in the 1/4 3:73s are overkill for the TPI setup, they stop making power past 4500 rpms. You'd benefit more with 3:42s.

So in the 1/4 mile I would be past 4500 RPM's with the 3.73's and the 3.42's would be still in the power band at the end of the track?? I mostly run the 1/8 mile and Im at the end of second gear with the 2.73s and I run on average 9.55's so I was hoping to be able to get in the 9.40's and in third gear with the gear swap. My best run so far is a 9.52 at 79 mph with 2.73s. But im more worried about light to light drag racing than anything else. So anyways after thinking about it Im going to go ahead and put the 3.42s in and now just out of curiosity what do you guys think Ill be running now in the 1/8 mile with the new gear swap?? Ill let yall know what my new track times are after I finally get my car back on the road and to the track it should be some time next week and on a thursday, thats street night at the local drag strip(Kennadeal speedway). Thanks for the replys and help.

Listen to Mark, I talked to him about my gears switching from 2.73 to 3.42.....was the best choice I ever made. When I cross the line I am right at red line in 3rd gear

Yeah I was going to say 3.42's, thats the lowest you can go without changing the carrier, which means about $100 more on top of the gears.

What track you race at? Kennedale? I'm up here in Paris, we have an 1/8th also, but I'm in the Dallas area alot. As a matter of fact I'm heading that way in a couple of hours.

I had to change out the carrier because i went from 2.73s(2 series) to 3.42s(3 series).I just bought the slp posi unit for $99 since i was going to the lower gears.

Yea I race out at Kennedale every thursday its test and tune night and it only cost 10 bucks and race as many times as you can.I race sometimes but for the most part I go out there to hang out and watch people race.

Thought I read in Jegs that they sale a 3.42 gear set that will fit a 2 series carrier. Is this not a good ideal for a daily driver.

3.42 gears are great for highway. Have them in complete rear axle waiting for someone to haul it outa my yard if anyone is close to Dayton Ohio. Putting in narrowed Ford 9 with 4.33 gears. Not your average Camaro.

i got 3.73 and a tpi 305 it killed my gas milage 28 highway to 18 highway but great for stop light racing!
the drive ratio in first gear with those gears is great.
but would have to agree it will hurt u a bit in the 1/4
